Sunday sermon in 10/12/2008

Our pastor gave a message on the past Sunday. With his PhD in philosophy and the upcoming second PhD in Theology, he is without a doubt the most knowledgeable (and also witty) pastor that I’ve ever known. His sermon is unique in that he adds historic and theologian perspective to his message and I really appreciate him for providing such perspectives that I cannot think of on my own.

The text on Sunday was John 8:1-11. It was a story of a woman who committed adultery, the accusing crowd, and Jesus Christ who showed the depth of His grace. The origin of this story is not known clearly nonetheless the nature of this story rings true.

The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

To that, Jesus answered,

“If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

It doesn’t take much explanation to see Jesus’ character from this text. It shows how Jesus deals with us and our sin. There may be judgement for our sin, but nothing can separate us from the love of God. God will always receive us without condemnation.
