Media Invitation: Fifth International Day for Street Children Commemoration At Kenya Harlequins Ground

Media Invitation: Fifth International Day for Street Children Commemoration At Kenya Harlequins Ground, 12 April 2015

Koinonia community in collaboration with other Stakeholders wishes to invite journalists from your media organisation to an event organised to mark the fifth International Day for Street Children at Kenya Harlequins Grounds, Nairobi on 12 April 2015 starting at 9.00 am ending 5.00 pm.

Themed Louder Together, the event  is a campaign to give a louder voice to the millions of street children all around the world so that their rights cannot be ignored.  It will also focus on the global campaign to have the UN  adopt the day. This will create a platform for a greater global exposure and increase pressure on governments to act on issues relating to the Street Children.

It is within this framework that Koinonia community seeks to join the global actors in commemorating this special day for some of the most vulnerable children in the society who are our main target. The community considers the day as an important opportunity to raise awareness on the plight of street children in Kenya. An opportunity for change through listening to the street children, involving those who work with them and advocating for integrated approaches to tackle their needs and to share good practice.

This is within the theme of the day which will be a celebration of the United Nations agreeing to develop a General Comment on Children in Street Situations and the positive impact it will have on street children and the organizations that support them.

Background
There are millions of children living on the streets worldwide; Children who are neglected, abused and have their human rights violated on a daily basis. Although children on the streets have rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, in the same way that all other children do, many government policies do not reflect this. Hence, there is an ever increasing need for platforms to be created from which the plight of street children could be addressed. As a result, the convergence of efforts by different actors who endeavor to resolve the numerous challenges facing street children, led to the establishment of 12th April as the International Day for street children.
