In 2023, Peter’s life took a new turn alongside his two brothers, they had ended up in the streets of Nairobi after the tragic loss of their parents. With no support and nowhere to call home, survival became their daily struggle, until hope found them through Koinonia Community. Our team at Ndugu Mdogo Rescue Centre welcomed the brothers offering them not just food and shelter, but also the healing power of psychosocial counselling, this was the beginning of a journey from pain to purpose.
At the beginning of last year (2024), Peter and his brothers transitioned to Kivuli Centre, where they were enrolled in school at Kabiria Road Primary School as our social workers continued working to trace and reconnect with their extended family. Today, we’re hopeful with two strong leads, an elder brother and an aunt, both of whom we are engaging with as potential caregivers. We believe that family-based care remains the most sustainable and loving environment for every child.
In Kivuli, Peter was introduced to various co-curricular activities, he quickly developed a passion for acrobatics which he continues to excel in to date, but what truly sparked his soul was a simple, traditional flute “the Chivoti”, a musical instrument native to the Mijikenda Communities. At first, Peter explored the Chivoti on his own, teaching himself melodies in moments of quiet and curiosity. His talent did not go unnoticed. Our in-house music teacher recognized his potential and began mentoring him. With guidance and determination, he quickly mastered the art of the Chivoti in a matter of months.
By the beginning of 2025, Peter had advanced so impressively that he was selected to represent his school Kabiria Road Primary School in the Kenya Schools Music Festivals. After going through the different competiotion stages, his talent and commitment led him to emerge as the runner-up in the entire Nairobi Region, earning him a spot to represent his school and Nairobi Region at the National’s level of the Music Festivals, set to take place in Meru County from August 4th to 16th 2025.
Peter’s story is a testimony of what can happen when opportunity meets a prepared and supported child. From a life on the streets to the national stage, his journey reminds us of the incredible resilience, talent and potential that lies within every child, just waiting to be nurtured. At Koinonia we celebrate him, we are cheering him on and we wish him nothing but success as he heads to the National’s Music Festivals. May the Chivoti sing his triumph and may the trophy come home!
