SALAMA CRAFT COMMUNITY CENTER
Salama Craft Community Centre, a beacon of hope in Kibera, Nairobi’s largest informal settlement, empowers disadvantaged teen mothers and young women. Founded in 2020 under the umbrella of Koinonia Community, a project dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and youth, Salama is a registered organization (certificate number 00410) with a proven track record of success.

Salama’s comprehensive training programs equip these young women with valuable skills in catering, beauty, and hairdressing, paving the path to self-sufficiency and a brighter future. Childcare services are provided during training sessions, ensuring their children are well cared for while they invest in their own transformation. The impact is undeniable. Salama has empowered over 110 young mothers and teen mothers, with many securing job placements through partnerships with local restaurants. Additionally, graduates have successfully launched their own businesses, demonstrating the transformative power of Salama’s programs.

Challenges Include:
1. Limited access to education and marketable skills
2. Lack of access to legal documents and legal awareness
3. Inadequate healthcare and nutrition for themselves and their children
4. Difficulty in identifying the real needs of children

This lack of opportunity often traps them in a cycle of poverty, impacting their own lives and the well-being of their children. Salama identified these needs through direct interaction with the community, participatory workshops, and collaborations with local organizations. These extensive needs assessment informed the design of our project, ensuring it directly addresses the most critical challenges faced by the target population.
